I’ve had this theory about Tiger Woods for a few years — and it has nothing to do with mistresses, sex rehabilitation or other tabloid fodder.
No, this is in regard to Woods the professional golfer. You remember him: 10-time player of the year, 14-time major champion, all-time great.

I’ve had this theory about Tiger Woods for a few years — and it has nothing to do with mistresses, sex rehabilitation or other tabloid fodder.

No, this is in regard to Woods the professional golfer. You remember him: 10-time player of the year, 14-time major champion, all-time great.

[+] Enlarge AP Photo/Bob GalbraithIn his younger days, Tiger Woods showed a true passion for the game of golf. As he’s gotten older, that passion appears to have waned.

Even before Tiger went AWOL from the world, I had never confronted him about this theory of mine, simply because he would have disregarded the notion with an innocent shrug and confounded denial. That’s OK, though. I didn’t need to hear his thoughts, because I could see his actions.

From temper tantrums after sprayed tee shots to profanity-laced tirades based on shifting wind directions, from faraway stares as awestruck fans chanted his name to a general look of utter disdain while playing the game, the No. 1-ranked player helped formulate my idea from inside the ropes. Finally, I understood what was eating at the man, why he looked so miserable while he so often dominated.

Tiger Woods no longer enjoys playing golf.

This theory is more relevant now than ever before, because it serves as an explanation for why his current self-imposed exile has continued into what would have been his first appearance of the PGA Tour season at Torrey Pines, and might extend longer than most of us realize.

Even when healthy and without family obligations for a full season — a combination that hasn’t happened since 2005 — Woods plays fewer events than nearly every other exempt professional. He has often admitted that he doesn’t tee it up when on vacation. He’s never even seen some of the world’s best golf courses that haven’t hosted top-level tournaments during his career.

Sure, his rigorous practice regimen is legendary, but that speaks more about his work ethic and dedication than his passion. Think about it: If Woods loved the game, wouldn’t he seek solace from his damaged personal life in the familiar confines of a tournament? Wouldn’t he attempt to claim some sense of normalcy in an all-too-irregular life by getting back to the one thing he does better than anyone else?

Get all the latest news, highlights and commentary about the world’s No. 1 golfer on ESPN.com. Tiger Tracker

It wasn’t always this way. Chances are there was no “Eureka!” moment in which Woods decided golf no longer affected him as it did before. Rather, it was likely a gradual occurrence, taking place between the time he declared, “Hello, world” upon turning professional in 1996 and when he won the JBWere Masters in Australia two months ago — his most recent appearance on a golf course, which might be remembered more for Woods’ bouncing a driver into the gallery in frustration than finishing atop the leaderboard.

Don’t get me wrong. Tiger doesn’t dislike everything about the game. In fact, he has thrived on performing in the competitive arena throughout his career. He loves winning, adores being better at a singular pursuit than every other person on the planet. He is driven to not only break every record, but to put each one out of reach for the next phenom who comes along.

That’s not all. For better or worse, Woods might have also become dependent upon the luxuries that emanated from his status. Fame. Power. Money. If we are to believe the tabloid stories of his sordid affairs, each one fits this unraveling addictive personality.

The game itself, though? The actual act of swinging the club and strategizing his way around a course and trying to get the ball into the hole in as few strokes as possible? That novelty wore off long ago.

Jack Nicklaus, the man whose major championship record Woods has spent a lifetime pursuing, was recently asked what golf has meant to him, and explained: “I played a game because I loved it, and I played it for the sake of the game. I played it because when I played that game, the competition, the charge that I got from it, excited me to be really good at something. It excited me to be able to focus on something, something to work at, something that gave me goals, something that filled my life with excitement.”

The next time Woods speaks with such reverence and enthusiasm will be the first time. He has often been lauded for his businesslike approach to the game, but it’s possible that his lack of positive emotion during anything but victorious moments has been misconstrued as focus and desire

Nowadays, golf is experiencing a boom all around the world, and its funs ranked from adults to children. As many new facilities are that offer children affordable access to play the game are being constructed throughout the country and the world, more and more youngsters begin to enjoy this excitement at the golf course.

So, as parents what should you do if your son or daughter show you an interest in learning to play golf? There are some tips for parents on how to introduce their children to golf and how to cultivate their interest. Welcome to the world of Callaway_Golf Clubs.

Firstly, parents are the catalyst to the growth of their child’s interest in golf. A visit to the driving range where you and your child can spend time together is an excellent way to get started. Invite some of your child’s friends along so that they associate golf with fun. If you do like this, you must harvest much.

We know, once a strong foundation has been developed, a visit to your local course or Par 3 course is warranted. Try to play in non-peak hours so that your child is not subject to the pressures of pace of play requirements of a busy facility.

Children learn by imitation, so encourage watching a PGA or LPGA event on TV. If you should have a tour event in your local area, go to the course. The crowds and excitement of big time golf are great magnets for a young person’s imagination.

Many recreation departments and most public golf facilities offer at Drgolfstore.com which are not only in good quality but also in a lower price. So it’s quite practical.

Do what you should do if your children show a strong desire to learn play golf, then maybe one day in the near future, you will be proud of your new star of golf.

Today golf is played by most executives and on the course is where networking happens and business relationships are formed. Also, today there are women that fill these executive roles and many have started to play golf for business purposes. Notably a womens’ group of executives banded together and have thousands of members across the country in the Executive Womens Golf Association. Not too many Years ago golf was primarily a men’s sport and when women started taking over high positions in the work force, they did not consider playing golf as part of their job. Most women that hold these jobs are very responsible people and they have felt their time was more productive in the office.(Interesting observation about priorities.) Today golf for women is more popular and the female executives realize the importance of the business relationships gained on the golf course.

Some men are surprised when one of their foursome is a woman, and especially if it is their boss. Men can and do react in several ways notably: assuming a more gentlemen-like demeanor should be foremost.Trying to impress the female player is usually counter productive. The macho golf man may win the attention, but not the good graces of his work superior. The more productive attitude might well be-just act naturally. The men who act more like gentlemen than they normally would on a golf course do so because they are used to being respectful to women in other circumstances. Your female boss may have the authority and power, but underneath is a sensitivity which men dare not abuse!

On the golf course men normally tell jokes, drink alcohol, make bets and do other things they would not do in the company of a respected woman. Having a woman in their foursome should put them in the frame of mind of acting respectful as they would in any another setting. Many men think golf for women is great but co-ed golf is a new venture for them.

Male chauvinism is not a smart attitude, even if your boss wants to be competitive. If you must win then do it with grace and charm. Hear that guys?

Don’t show off, even if you are the superior player. because one knows and applies the fundamentals of golf better, and is much more accustomed to playing is no excuse. The 18 holes of golf should be viewed as a day full of opportunities for the woman to see some athleticism, gather insights into her golfing skills and hopefully improve her knowledge about the employees who work for her.

At its core, golf is known as a game of character and if you must impress your boss, then show your character in its best light.

Most men by now are not bothered by the above situations at all. They probably play at their own club with other avid golfers who are women or their wife or sister has taken up the sport. These men will likely enjoy the day more than anyone since they will simply play the game of golf as they would at any business function. Their behavior should display their real business and social personality. This allowing the boss to get to know her subordinates better. The almost laid-back behavior will also make the female boss feel more comfortable with the business day and look forward to future golf outings for all employees. When men carried wooden clubs they could be invulnerable, but the golf club is a humbling instrument-so beware!

Abu Dhabi Golf Championship 2010 Masters Odds: PAUL LAWRIE had fierce family rivalry to thank for his scorching start at the Abu Dhabi Championship yesterday.

The Scot soared to just a shot off the lead with a flawless six-under 66 - his best opening round for more than two years.

And Lawrie put his stunning show down to having spent the last fortnight locked in battle with his two golf-mad sons on a nine-hole course in Dubai.

That preparation helped the 1999 Open champ reel off six birdies on the National course yesterday to sit among nine players in a share of fourth, while Ian Poulter tops the board on seven under with fellow Englishman Richard Bland and South Africa’s Keith Horne.

Lawrie said: “We were over in Dubai with the kids for nearly two weeks and they have a nine-hole course at Jebel Ali so I played a lot of golf over the festive break.

“I didn’t practise and just warmed up playing nine holes each day with Craig and Michael - they are both extremely keen.

“Craig is 14 and plays off eight and Michael, who’s 11, is down to 14-handicap so they are both very handy. It’s tough to beat them but I did!

“So I’m not surprised to have made a great start because I have played a lot of golf with my two boys and hit the ball really well. It’s just nice to be back.”

Lawrie’s score was his lowest first-round tally since he began the 2007 Dunhill Links Championship with a 66.

And the highlight came with a great escape at the par-five eighth, which he was playing as the 17th.

Lawrie found a fairway bunker with his tee shot then slipped while playing his three wood out of the sand. The ball veered far right into a waste area from where he managed to get up and down for birdie.

Joint leader Poulter saved the best for last with a brilliant 70-foot downhill putt on 18.

He said: “I hit it probably 10 feet too hard but it was on line and lucky enough it hit the back of the hole then popped up and dropped.

“I wasn’t expecting to come out quite as fast as that after a five-week break but I will certainly take it.”

Alongside Lawrie on six under are Alvaro Quiros and Sergio Garcia plus world No. 10 Rory McIlroy.

Ladies European Tour (LET) officials announced yesterday with great excitement that the 2010 ANZ Ladies Masters has attracted the strongest field ever for any Australian professional golf

tournament. Let’s see the strong team.

2009 European No.1 Sophie Gustafson has confirmed she will return to the ANZ Ladies Masters for the first time in six years when she tees it up at the RACV Royal Pines Resort between 4 and 7

March 2010. The 36-year-old Swede, who enjoyed a very successful year on both the Ladies European Tour (LET) and US LPGA, will certainly be a crowd pleaser at the tournament due to her big

hitting and aggressive style of play. Do you know Titleist 2010 AP2 Irons is her favorite.

2009 LPGA Major, Tour Championship and Ladies European Tour Rookie of the Year winner Anna Nordqvist will make her first appearance in Australia as a professional when she competes

atthe ANZ Ladies Masters to be played at the RACV Royal Pines Resort, Gold Coast, Queensland in March. The 22 year old Swede has enjoyed an amazing rookie year since turning professional

last December.

The 2010 ANZ Ladies Masters at RACV Royal Pines on the Gold Coast provided even greater cause for celebration of its 20th anniversary when the tournament’s promoters Tuohy Associates

today announced that two of the most outstanding young talents in female golf are now confirmed for the event.19 year old Taiwanese golfer, Yani Tseng, and 20 year old Korean, Ji Yai Shin, have

both confirmed their entry to play and while both have played the ANZ Ladies Masters previously, their stunning seasons in 2008 now place them at another level in world golf.

And some of the other international players who will come streaming in to play in the event, possibly to top up their annual earnings from a reduced LPGA schedule unlikely to be anywhere near as

lucrative this year as it has been in the past, include three world-class Korean golfers in the form of Hee Young Park (36), Hee Kyung Seo (No.42) and M.J Hur (No.45) as well as Americans Stacey

Lewis, one of her country’s most exciting young prospects, and flamboyant compatriot Christina Kim (No.48). Of course Australia’s best will all be there. Two of them have previously won the ANZ

Ladies Masters. Webb is a six-time champion and Katherine Hull the defending champion.

Looking forward to the 2010 ANZ Ladies Masters, and so exciting to meet those famous women golfers. You and me, can’t miss it. And you can find those cool golf clubs which welcomed by those

If you are starting to play golf following a primarily sedentary life style then you will discover that it’s going to be rather tough for you to just run out and play and an entire 18 holes of golf. But, if you were playing for some time you are likely in better physical shape, but in general your golf game will be greatly influenced by your level of physical health. If you are in good shape physically, concerning overall flexibility, strength and staying power then you can play a significantly better game than somebody who is in lesser physical form.

You are going to require to increase overall flexibility concurrently that you work to increase strength so as to have the best all round physical condition possible to be able to play. What this means is that you want to work to build muscle, as opposed to bulky muscles. The main differences is the amount of flexibility that the muscles give. Large muscles tend to be stronger, yet at the same time they are not as flexible which will significantly minimize your capacity to twist properly in your backswing. Nevertheless, building lean muscle is not difficult, on the other hand will take a mindful effort.

The majority of people who are working to build muscle strength tend to build muscle mass automatically. This is usually because they are using large amounts of weights. Rather build lean muscles you need to work to build repetitions of lower weight loads. This will enable you to improve your muscle strength, while allowing you to work in the direction of building the lean and slender muscles that are good for your overall golf game. Fight back the need to lift weights that are heavier than 10 pounds since this will end up in large muscles instead of lean muscles.

You should also work to keep the body as flexible as possible. What this means is it is advisable to be certain that you are stretching out both prior to and following playing golf to ensure that you are taking appropriate care of your body. If you tend not to stretch then you may find yourself very tender after a game and regret playing. Just stretching for less than 5 minutes before and after a round of golf will make sure that you are able to frequently play without having any issues and with no need of feeling as if you are spending more time stretches than playing golf.

When you are playing golf, it is extremely significant to keep in mind that you are sometimes out in the really hot sun. Because of this, you need to at all times ensure that you take some water with you to make sure that you stay well hydrated during the game. If you become overheated or dehydrated, it will begin to hinder your game at the same time as cause you complications in having the essential staying power to play. Constantly drink plenty of water to make certain that you are capable to continue playing. This is important irrespective of what type of training you are doing to make sure that you are as healthy as you possibly can.

Your final main idea should be making sure that you walk regularly. Golf may be a relatively slow moving hobby, but it does generally call for great amounts of walking. You need to be equipped to walk long distances free of losing your breath, or suffering from back or leg pain. These issues can genuinely lessen the amount of time that you can play and could potentially result in you needing to have to quit playing a game in the midst of a golf course. This is in no way something that is pleasant so ensuring that you get a lot of walking activity is crucial. If you have troubles with finding anywhere to walk then consider looking into a treadmill that will allow you to still get plentyof walking exercise especially away from the green.

A tiny bit of smart planning and a tiny bit of carefully planned and executed exercise can go a very long way in the direction of assisting you boost your golf game considerably.

To say it has been a bad few months for Tiger Woods would be a slight understatement. As bad a beating as he has taken from the media and sponsors, the subsidiary impact of his mess is about to really hit hard with another group – the PGA.

The PGA Tour kicked off on January 4, 2010 with the SBS Championship in Kapalua, Hawaii. What you didn’t hear about it? Exactly. By the way, Geoff Ogilvy one the tournament for the second straight year at 22 under. Regardless, the victory didn’t get much coverage except on golf outlets because a certain individual was not there. This wasn’t particularly troubling since he rarely plays the tournament. As the weeks pass, however, this is going to become a bigger problem.

Catch a Tiger by its tale…and watch the PGA weep! This pretty much sums up the situation. Tiger has a bushel of personal problems and nobody knows when he will be returning to the tour. Until then, the PGA is going to have some serious problems. Statistics have shown that television viewership drops roughly 50 percent when Woods does not play. That is a huge issue for tournaments already facing issues in a tough economy.

Take the San Diego Open at Torrey Pines in the last week of January. This is a tournament Tiger traditionally has always played at. All indications are that he will not this year. Torrey Pines is a tremendous golf course, but the promoters are having serious issues finding a major sponsor for the tournament. The tournament was once known as the Buick Open, a Tiger sponsor, but that has all gone by the wayside. With a smaller television audience sans Woods, it is simply proving to be difficult to attract sponsors per radio reports out here in San Diego. The tournament appears as though it will go on with a group of secondary sponsors, but this is a sign of things to come with future PGA events.

Any way you slice it, the PGA is in for a brutal year. A combination of a Tiger gone missing with a sour economic environment is a toxic mix. The PGA will survive, but a drop in win purses may have players realizing how important Tiger is to the tour.

Spring is on the way to come, but spring day is always full of cold and damp air. Is there anything worse than swinging a golf club and feeling the club slipping in your hands? Because if that happens you’re pretty much guaranteed a terrible golf shot. And unless you’re Tiger Woods it is very hard to stop the swing when you’re in the downswing of a golf swing.

I have no idea how Tiger does that! Anyway, if you’re playing in the rain then naturally the chances of your grip slipping as you make your golf swing go up as well.

But there are simple solutions to this problem which don’t have to cost you anything. And the first solution is a dry towel.

When you play golf, besides carry your golf equipment, you should at least carry 1 extra golf towel. Ideally you should carry two extra golf towels however. And if you’re getting hot and sweaty or it’s raining then before and after every golf shot you should be wiping your golf grips and hands with one of your dry towels. Also, if it’s raining you’ll obviously have your umbrella up so I suggest that you keep your towel under the umbrella to try and keep it dry for as long as you can. Then when your towel is not doing a good enough jobs then simply put it back in your golf bag and get another dry towel out.

Now here’s a neat trick. Every two or three holes simply get some sand from the bunkers (or from the little buckets they give you to put in divots) and rub some of the sand on your hands and on your golf grips. This will help to absorb the sweat and it will help you to keep a firm golf grip as you’re swinging. If you’re a women golfer you may prefer to take some talcum powder with you to the golf course and put this on your hands instead of sand.

So the next time you play a game of golf where it is possibly going to rain and humid…or heaven forbid….both at the same time! Then make sure you take at least two towels and try your best to keep them dry. Then every golf hole or two put some sand on your hands and on your grips. Doing these little things will help you to keep your golf grip secure as you’re swinging the golf club. Because again, there’s nothing worse than going to play a golf shot and having your hands feel as though they are going to slip on the golf grip, is there?
