Full report with analysis:
It’s a big day for Indian fans, especially Vidit Gujrathi fans, as the youngster from Nashik, not only beat Alireza Firouzja, but for the first time in chess career broke into the top 20 in the world.
Vidit played a flawless game of chess to beat Firouzja. An impressive decision by Vidit was to play the Exchange Slav – an opening that is considered by many as drawish in nature, but Vidit realized that it would be the most uncomfortable for an active and tactical player like Firouzja. His decision was 100% rewarded as Firouzja went pawn hunting in the opening and Vidit punished him with one precise move after another.
Vidit is now up to 2736 on the live FIDE rating list and is also world no.19. We wish him the best for the last four rounds in the Prague Masters. Until then enjoy the game with IM Sagar Shah.
